Professor Riccardo Masetti Fund
Introduction
In 2024, Think Pink Europe took a significant step forward in its mission to close the healthcare gap for breast cancer patients across Europe by establishing the Professor Riccardo Masetti Fund. This initiative honors Professor Riccardo Masetti, a revered figure in the fight against breast cancer. Throughout his career, Professor Masetti has made remarkable contributions as a doctor, the President of S. G. Komen Italia, and as a co-founder of Think Pink Europe. His tireless dedication has inspired this fund, which will unify and enhance our efforts under a single impactful initiative.
Historical Context: 2024 Projects
Before the creation of the Professor Riccardo Masetti Fund, Think Pink Europe managed various separate initiatives:
- Health Days: Events designed to promote awareness, early detection, and education about breast cancer.
- The Pink Bag Project: A program providing essential resources and support to breast cancer patients.
- BOLD Expo Awareness Campaign: Aimed at raising awareness and fostering collaboration in the fight against breast cancer.
Each of these projects played a crucial role in addressing disparities in healthcare access and support for breast cancer patients across Europe. However, the need for a more cohesive and streamlined approach led to the establishment of the Professor Riccardo Masetti Fund.
The Professor Riccardo Masetti Fund: A Unified Vision
From 2025 onward, all "Close The Gap" projects and support provided by Think Pink Europe will be consolidated under the Professor Riccardo Masetti Fund. This fund embodies our commitment to addressing healthcare inequalities, particularly for breast cancer patients, and will serve as the cornerstone of our initiatives moving forward.
Eligibility and Goals
To be eligible for funding, projects must align with the overarching mission of Think Pink Europe: closing the healthcare gap in Europe, with a specific focus on breast cancer. By concentrating resources and efforts, the fund aims to:
Improve access to early detection, treatment, and post-care support for breast cancer patients.
Promote innovative solutions and awareness campaigns to combat breast cancer disparities.
Strengthen collaborations across European healthcare systems and organizations.
Projects that have been selected for support from the PRM fund this year are:
BELGIUM | Pink Power Connect
The project focuses on combating feelings of loneliness among breast cancer patients. We organize a peer support day in every province in Belgium and Brussels, where participants can meet, share experiences, and take part in relaxing and supportive activities. These events are held as much as possible in locations where no existing peer support group or walk-in center is available, ensuring we reach as many people as possible and demonstrate that no one facing breast cancer has to go through it alone.
MONTENEGRO | Closing the healthcare gap for breast cancer patients in Montenegro
This project, aligned with the Think Pink Europe "Close the Gap" initiative, aims to address healthcare disparities for breast cancer patients in Montenegro, particularly for women in less developed areas. It will involve conducting a survey to create a national breast cancer patient registry, providing valuable data on diagnostic and treatment experiences. The project's Main event will be a high-level conference on women's health focused on doctors and medical workers on the one side and breast cancer patients on the other. By obtaining free transportation, meals, and accommodation, we will provide women from the regions outside the capital city access to up-to-date information, support services, and the opportunity to participate in this women's health conference in the capital city. A comprehensive media campaign will raise awareness about the survey, encourage participation, and share key insights from the conference. Ultimately, the project seeks to improve access to care, empower women with knowledge and bridge healthcare gaps across
SPAIN, Canarias | Pink Scholarship
In 2025 and for the occasion of its 20th anniversary, the Carrera por la Vida Foundation wants to launch its first PINK SCHOLARSHIP program for the training of professionals from different disciplines in oncology matters.
ROMANIA | Mobile unit for free screenings
Romania is one of the few European countries where there is no national, free of charge breast cancer screening program. This highlights the importance of initiatives like ours, which aim to improve early detection and access to life-saving treatments. The Renasterea Foundation proposes an innovative project under the #CloseTheGap initiative of Think Pink Europe, aimed at reducing inequalities in access to medical investigation for breast cancer patients who are living in disadvantaged regions of Romania. The project includes the implementation of a mobile mammography unit to provide free screening – mammograms 3D for women in rural and underserved areas, accompanied by an educational workshop for a better life for cancer patients and an awareness campaign on the importance of early breast cancer detection. The beneficiaries of the project are 120 women diagnosed with cancer who need follow-up examinations. They tend to skip the follow-up examination due to the fact that the distance to the Bucharest Oncological Institute is about 250 km. We will place the logos of Think Pink Europe and the Riccardo Masetti Fund on the mobile unit to highlight the strong collaboration in the fight against breast cancer and #Closethegap of Think Pink Europe through the Riccardo Masetti Fund.
UKRAINE | Making breast cancer understandable
The project aims to provide patients with up-to-date and reliable information about breast cancer, treatment, complications, and rehabilitation.
KOSOVO | Psychological support
Provide consistent psychological support for breast cancer patients and survivors across Kosovo, fostering emotional well-being, resilience, and mutual support through in-person sessions in Pristina, Prizren, and key gatherings at Hotel Sirius.
SERBIA | Breast cancer patient navigation APP
The Breast Cancer Patient Navigation App is an innovative digital tool designed to support women diagnosed with breast cancer in Serbia. As the first of its kind in the country, the app serves as a step-by-step guide, providing essential information about diagnostics, treatment, and rehabilitation. It addresses challenges such as unequal access to healthcare services, lack of information, and communication barriers between patients and healthcare professionals.
Through educational modules, localized resources, and practical guidance, the app empowers patients to navigate the healthcare system with confidence. By bridging the gap between urban and rural healthcare access, it ensures that every patient has the knowledge and tools to manage their treatment journey effectively.
BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA | Health Days
Project "Health Days in BIH" aims to provide free mammogram and additional checkups to women in rural, under-served communities in our country.
It is planned to organize 4 Health Days events and provide exam to 200 women from different parts of BIH.
Looking Ahead
The creation of the Professor Riccardo Masetti Fund marks a new chapter for Think Pink Europe. By centralizing our efforts and fostering collaboration, we are better equipped to tackle the inequalities in breast cancer care across Europe. This fund is not just a tribute to Professor Masetti's legacy but also a testament to our shared commitment to a future where everyone has equal access to quality breast cancer care.
